Why Newage is a Sin

I'm starting a new series of blog posts, podcasts and videos called "New Age to Grace Believer". After having shared my own personal testimony of leaving the newage and coming back to biblical teachings, I received a lot of feedback from people saying that the testimony was helpful and encouraging to them. So, I thought I would take it one step further and do some helpful blog posts, podcasts and videos specifically for those who have left newage and are believers now.

If you have not read my testimony, you can do so by watching the video below if you want to

I'm hoping that this will be helpful to those of you who have left the new age, and perhaps even help current new-agers to hear and understand the gospel of the grace of God and why new age is a sin and a deception, and hopefully choose to believe the gospel unto salvation. If you are a grace believer that knows anyone involved in the newage movement, or who has just left the newage, feel free to share this with them. This can also be a helpful study for grace believers that want to learn more about this particular topic.

God's will for all of mankind is:

1 Tim 2:4 "Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth."

I also hope to steer you in the right direction of learning God's word rightly divided so that you will then choose to study the word of truth (The Bible) for yourself and be established in sound grace doctrine.

Introduction: What is New Age?

If you have come out of the “new age religion”, then you already know what it is. But, in case you don't know, I will try to explain what it is. New age doesn't have a centralized church, group or congregation. They do not have any formal creeds. However, new agers tend to share many of the same beliefs, philosophies and world views. The "goal" for new agers is to "usher in a new age of peace" on the earth. They believe that this occurs through spiritual enlightenment and the help of "angels, ascended masters, ETs, and various kinds of gods and goddesses".

They tend to believe in past lives, energy healing, faeries, angel worship, unicorns, a modified form of Marianism, goddess and nature worship, the law of attraction, UFOs, Bigfoot, animal spirit guides, ghosts, divination, astrology, dowsing, numerology, hypnosis, channeling, mediumship, the use of positive affirmations with very newage philosopies, and various kinds of meditation techniques. They often take ideas and beliefs from other religions like Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Wicca, Taoism, Yoga and other religious teachings. Things like yoga, crystal healing, flower essences, and vision boards have been made popular in society predominantly by new agers. They are also really big into various kinds of philosophies, quantum physics, motivational type of teachings and positive psychology.

Some of the most popular new age authors and teachers were raised in "Christian" homes or were introduced to new age ideas by [heretical] “Christian” denominations (like unity church and Christian science). The early new age authors were strongly influenced by the transcendental movement (Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thorough), Christian Science, and the Unity Church (all of which claimed to be traditional Christians at one time and went off to start their own "denominations"). If new agers do read the Bible, they read it as a "metaphysical interpretation" instead of reading it literally and dispensationally. People like Oprah Winfrey and PBS specials that feature newage authors, have made newage teachings much more popular in the culture today.

Many newagers initially get involved in the newage movement to help them with physical, emotional or mental health issues. For example, if they are having anxiety or depression, they might try yoga, meditation or the use of positive affirmations to help them. These practices might even be recommended by a doctor or a psychologist. [By the way, there is a difference between affirmations used in the treatment of mental health issues by therapists and doctors, verses the ones promoted by newagers. Clinical use type of affirmations tend to be very basic and non-religious such as saying, "I can take small steps daily to improve my health" or "I set healthy boundaries with others." Newagers take it way further, by adding their religious philosophy and saying things like "I am at one with the universe " or "I attract healing energy into my body". It is up to each believer to decide for themselves if the more basic affirmations recommended by therapists for treating certain mental health conditions would be acceptable to them or not based upon their own personal understanding and convictions from scripture. I know that there are some believers who say a complete NO to the use of positive affirmations, different kinds of meditation and things like yoga, while others don't have an issue with them. I'm NOT here to have dominion over your faith, but to be a helper of your joy. It's up to you to decide for yourself, based upon your own understanding of scripture.]

Once they notice that its been helpful, they might then start to do more research into those practices and come across things that are more specifically newage type of practices and teachings, and start reading books by newage authors. One thing can potentially lead to another. Over time, the more simple practices might no longer be as helpful or they might just desire to try other things and so they begin to get even more involved with occult type of practices like tarot cards for “guidance”, praying to angels for “protection and healing”, using crystals to “raise your vibration”, going to drumming circles out in nature for “community” etc. Again, one thing can lead to another! They might have started out innocently but before you know it they are claiming that Jesus is just an ascended master, faeries and unicorns are real, worshipping all kinds of false deities, channeling “star people from other planets”, etc!

Of course not all people head in that direction just by using the more basic clinical type of affirmations or other recommended practices, but many do.

The newage movement also seems to be made up primarily of women (more women following the newage movement than men). Many products and services by newagers are also for women by women. Women are encouraged to "express their authentic selves" in the newage teachings which is appealing to the womans flesh because it is a focus on the self. It also focuses on things like "intuition" and emotions, which is also more appealing to a woman's flesh.

Why New Age is a Sin

The Bible is the Holy living word of God. Here is what the Bible has to say about newage type of teachings and practices:

Why New Age is a Sin

The Bible is the Holy living word of God. Here is what the Bible has to say about newage type of teachings and practices:

Sometimes newagers say that they are not witches (or sorcerers, enchanters and charmers) and are not practicing "dark magic" but are practicing a form of "white magic" or "law of attraction" with “good intentions.” However, ALL forms of so-called "magic" (and idolatry, etc) is evil in God's eyes. This is because these religious teachings come from Satan [Satan's policy of evil; false doctrines; doctrines of devils] and his devils, and from people who are in rebellion against God. People who practice these things are doing so in rebelliousness to God and His word, and they are most often unbelievers (never having believed the gospel), though even Christians can get caught up in newage teachings. Romans chapter 1:18-32 talks about how man has rebelled against God. These verses are about God giving up the Gentile Nations after the tower of Babel, but is also in reference to unbelievers in general. *In the parentheses is my personal commentary.

Romans 1:18-32 KJB

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; [Gods wrath is just]

19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. [Mankind is without excuse]

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: [all people have an internal witness within them that tells us God exists and is a Holy God; we also have evidence of a creator because of creation around us that shows us God exists and is an intelligent designer and that He is very powerful!]

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. [Instead of believing God and giving Him glory, man becomes unthankful and their hearts are dark against God; they don't want to admit their need for a savior]

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, [they begin to create their own religions]

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. [They would rather worship other people, animals, trees, even things like snakes than God! Newagers do this - they worship angels, imaginary beings like faeries, mermaids, goddesses, and even nature and really anyone and anything but the Lord Jesus Christ! If they do pray to "Jesus" it's not the Lord Jesus Christ, it's a false newage Jesus.]

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: [fornication often follows idolatry]

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. [New-Agers also change the truth about God into their own ideas about God; they worship and serve Satan with their false teachings!]

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. [Homosexuality is a sin and specifically it is a sin against nature. Man makes himself into his own God and so decides to pervert the natural order of things. This is in rebellion to God.]

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; [rejecting God and turning to man-made religion leads to the following (thus humanity isn't "evolving" like newagers claim):]

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, [newagers hate the literal interpretation of the Bible thus they hate God] despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, [Quija boards, tarot and oracle card decks, etc could be in this category], disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. [Newagers love people who hate the literal interpretation of the Bible like they do!]
