It establishes us in the doctrines of grace. Romans 1:11 says "For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;"
It is an essential gift from God that He has given to us, that through His word rightly divided we can be established in sound grace doctrine so that we can function properly as believers today in the dispensation of the grace of God. We will be able to choose to live Godly, understanding God's will for believers today and participating in the work of the ministry alongside fellow grace believers. We must be established in grace doctrine before we can properly serve God and be helpful towards fellow believers or else we may be trying to live out the Christian life by the efforts of our flesh instead of it being Christ living His life in and through us. The book of Romans establishes us in the grace doctrines so it must be studied first.
Here is the basic layout of the edification process in this book:
Romans 1-4 is about justification.
Romans 5 eternal security
Romans 6-8 our identity in Christ
Romans 9-11 dispensational changes and What God is doing today
Romans 12 - Service as a Believer and member of the body of Christ
Romans 13 Authority
Romans 14 dealing with weaker brethren by grace
Romans 15 - oneness and glorifying God
Romans 16 - working in unison with fellow believers
